Scaffolding for Heritage and Listed Buildings
We don’t treat listed buildings and heritage structures like a standard construction site. That’s because the fabric of the building, such as the stonework, brickwork, decorative features and historic joinery, can be damaged by a scaffold that has not been properly designed for the structure.
Our expert team also considers conservation regulations and their strict requirements for how work is carried out to avoid damage during access, which can be costly and difficult to remedy.
These projects also involve more stakeholders than a standard job. Conservation officers, architects and specialist contractors all have requirements that the scaffolding contractor needs to work within from the start.
We have provided bespoke scaffolding for listed and heritage buildings across London and understand what this type of project involves before we arrive on site.
How We Work on Heritage Projects
B&T Scaffolding assess every heritage project in person. On a listed building, the decisions made at the planning stage have a direct bearing on whether the building fabric is protected throughout the works.
This is a conversation to have with a team that has seen the site. Here’s how we work:
Before work starts – We carry out an ultra-detailed site visit and assess the structure, access constraints and any conservation requirements specific to the building. Fixings, tie points and loading are all considered in relation to the building fabric, and where scaffold design drawings are required, we deliver them. Risk assessments and method statements are issued before work begins.
On-site – Installations are planned to avoid damage to the building at every stage. We use various protective measures where the scaffold comes into contact with historic surfaces. We manage the scaffold and maintain open communication with conservation officers and specialist contractors throughout the project. All of our team members hold CISRS/CSCS cards and are CITB-registered.
On completion – We will carefully dismantle and remove the scaffold, checking the building fabric on strike. The site is left clean and handover certificates and TG20 compliance documentation are provided.

Frequently Ask Questions
How is scaffolding designed to protect listed and heritage buildings?
Scaffolding is carefully designed to avoid damage to historic fabric. We assess fixings, tie points and load distribution in detail, using protective measures where the structure meets sensitive surfaces.
Do you carry out site visits before quoting for heritage projects?
Yes, every heritage project is assessed in person before quoting. This allows us to understand the building, access constraints and conservation requirements before any scaffolding is planned.
Can you work alongside conservation officers and specialist contractors?
Absolutely. We regularly liaise with conservation officers, architects and specialist trades to ensure all scaffolding meets the strict requirements of heritage and listed building projects.
Are scaffold designs provided for complex or historic structures?
Yes, where required, we produce detailed scaffold design drawings tailored to the building. This is particularly important for non-standard or sensitive structures.
What measures are used to prevent damage during installation and removal?
We use protective padding, careful fixing methods and controlled installation techniques to minimise contact with historic surfaces. The same care is taken during dismantling, with checks carried out on completion.
Are your scaffolders qualified to work on heritage sites?
All scaffolders are CISRS/CSCS qualified and CITB-registered, with experience working on sensitive heritage projects where precision, care and compliance are essential.
