Project Overview
A London-based contractor brought in BT Scaffolding to support the restoration of a listed building at 23 Austin Friars.
The work included restoring the property’s chimney and refurbishing the façade, carried out with care to protect the building’s historic features. The project required both internal and external scaffold structures, each designed to suit the constraints of a listed property.
Inside, a birdcage scaffold was built in the stairwell to give safe access for flue
redevelopment. Externally, a specialist scaffold was assembled around the chimney stack to allow detailed stonework and repointing.
Project Size and Execution
In addition to the chimney restoration, façade scaffolding was installed across three elevations of the building, with 80 metres along the west side, 40 metres along the north and over 70 metres along the east elevation, ensuring full access for wider façade refurbishment activities.
The structure featured loading bays and walkway scaffolding across two elevations, improving movement and operational efficiency throughout the site. Given the building’s location in a busy area of the City of London, our experts carefully designed all scaffolding to minimise disruption and ensure public safety.
The project ran for six months, with BT Scaffolding carrying out weekly inspections to ensure everything stayed safe and fully compliant throughout.
